Rainwear Choices
The rainwear you choose can be just as important as the clothes you wear under it. There are a variety of options available that will allow you to take part in your normal activities just as if the rainwear itself doesn’t exist. Rainwear also serves to keep you warm and dry and can easily be discarded when necessary.
Rain jackets are typically short and are used most commonly when paired with rain pants. This is because they are not very long and, therefore, do not cover your entire body.
Parkas are a little longer than rain jackets and go down over the hips. While they do provide more coverage than would a rain jacket, the bottom half of your body will not receive protection from the wind and rain.
Anoraks are another type of rainwear that are commonly used. They are pull over-style. Unlike rain jackets and parkas, they do not have a front zipper which makes them more difficult to put on and take off. They are, however, the most weather proof style of rainwear because the lack of a zipper means less chance for leakage.
Ponchos are an inexpensive type of rainwear that are waterproof and allow for plenty of ventilation. They work well for everyday use and are quite popular.
Rain pants are great for those times when you really need to be out in the rain and full coverage is necessary. They work best when paired with a rain jacket and are most often used when running, skiing or hiking. Some are full-zip which allows for the convenience of quick changes while on the running or hiking trail and wide openings for boots or shoes.
Pull-on pants are less expensive and provide better protection in steady rain. Again, fewer zippers mean less chance of leakage. Many types are equipped with ankle zips to allow for easier changes over rain boots.
The type of rainwear you choose will depend on your exact needs. If you live in an area that doesn’t receive much rain, you may not want to spend more for gear that is feature packed for the occasion. On the other hand, if you do live in a relatively wet climate, spending the extra money may be just what you need to enjoy an active lifestyle no matter the weather conditions.
