Most trusted computer display connector- VGA
VGA or Video Graphics Array refers to one of the most popular video transferring technologies used in computer electronics. VGA connection is generally used to connect computers with external displays including old CRT monitors. VGA was first implemented by IBM as dedicated display hardware in 1987. Nowadays, the VGA standard is making its way in mobile market.
Originated by IBM, VGA was standardized when almost all other mainstream hardware manufacturers accepted it. Now it is considered as the most common component in computer hardware products available worldwide. Now, IBM has officially announced XGA standard to continue VGA standard. But, there are many better and established standards available today other than VGA/XGA such as HDMI and DVI. Clone PC manufacturers have accepted the standard to some extent, collectively calling it “Super VGA” format.
A typical VGA female connector found in all modern computers and select laptops has 15 dedicated pins. Similar 15 pin-VGA connector is found on almost all display-related computer components such as monitors, video cards, etc. Other multimedia devices such as television displays also support VGA connection which is universally called as HD-15.
In some cases, mini-VGA ports are also present in laptops or notebooks that save some space. VGA holds certain advantages over newer standards such as HDMI. Consumers have reported problems while using HDMI extension cables over a long distance. But, in case of VGA connectors, signal can be carried at up to 20 meters without any significant loss in quality.
VGA standard is not used for high definition broadcast as video quality is greatly diminished when converted to VGA format. For use in mobile handsets and handheld multimedia devices, 320x240 resolution is best suited. Highest known tweaked VGA signal is of 400x600x256 resolution which is not as good as 1080p or similar resolutions supported by HDMI and others.
