Memphis Subwoofer X max?

I just put 2 memphis c3 12'" 4 ohm DVC subs in my car a couple weeks ago. I got to looking at the specs for them and I noticed that it said it had an X max of 9.14mm. I was not sure what this meant so i looked it up online and noticed that other subs had x max's of around 14mm and up. I am still not sure what this means and im wondering if the X max (whatever it is) for my subs is really all that good. They were very expensive, but im wondering if this was just money down the drain.

xmas is the amount of travel your speaker can do linearly, or the amount it can move back and forth. Most times this number is represented as two way travel - the distance it goes inwards and outwards from the start position.

an xmas of 9.14 is small, very small for a 12 inch. Guessing, Memphis only stated one way travel of xmas and the full xmas would really be 18.28 mm which is much better.

You want to have a lot of extension, but the more extension the bigger the surrond the smaller the cone. There is a happy medium of cone size to excursion amount. Some manufactures have the right combo, others dont which is why some are more distorted (too much xmax) and not enough bass (not enough cone size).

While numbers do mean a lot, your ear is the final judge. If you think your system slams, thats all what matters. Memphis does make a good quality sub, it will last a long time if fed the proper signal and not abused to much.
