Just ask why the 05 'Kicker Comp are classified 600 watts of the 07 are labeled 300 watts.

Why is everything the way it is?

We have always had our ear to the ground for some kind of a home business. We wanted to be able to spend more time with our family and do the things we love, whenever we wanted and on our own terms. So, we looked into franchises and alas, the irony of a franchise like McDonald's, Starbucks or Baja Fresh is that you have to be a millionaire to own one of these! The requirements they have for a potential franchisee is that your net worth has to already be in the 7-figure range before they consider you worthy to own one. Well, that wasn't going to happen for us.

So, then we looked into cutting edge businesses that weren't saturated in the market already. The natural thing to look into was one of the prominent things in the news these days: energy conservation. We looked into several opportunities where you were essentially a Master Dealer for a manufacturer that produced equipment that greatly reduced energy costs mainly for businesses. Unfortunately, they were these little devices that you had to have a trained licensed electrician install. But that wasn't the kicker. The cost for these little devices that optimized energy usage was $35k and up. During our due diligence, we quickly started to realize this would be a hard sell to small business owners who would have a hard time swallowing a perceived ROI (return on investment) of 5 years or so. So, here we were still searching.

Then, we started to explore internet based home businesses. It quickly started to make sense to us the more we looked into it. Here's how we evaluated a home business versus a brick and mortar.

#1: There is no overhead with a home business. Meaning no trucks to lease, no payroll, no worker's comp, no utilities, no building rental, etc.

#2: Tax advantages. You can legitimately write off your computer, printer, phone, home office, etc. as a business expense.

#3: Flexible hours and no commute. You can work whenever you want and however you want. In your pajamas, after working out in the middle of the day, while on vacation, whatever. You call your own shots.

#4: Quality of life and time freedom. We personally wanted to spend more time with our children and watch them grow up. If you accomplish something in 4 hours, you don't have to waste time and sit around for another 4 hours waiting for the whistle (so to speak) at the end of the day to leave.

#5: Most home businesses don't require a huge upfront cost to get started. This can vary depending on the home business you choose that's right for you, but it isn't going to be unattainable or break the bank with most brick and mortar businesses.

In short, if you're looking to start your own business, consider all your options. But given what we've learned - and we're just an average ordinary family - the home business was the way to go. Consider what's important to you and evaluate your opportunities based on that.
