Making Custom Ported Subwoofer Enclosure/Boxes?

I am buying an 18" FI SSD. i would like to make a ported box at 33hz but, im putting it in a honda accord. i just want some info on how to do this, i pick up on stuff very well so if you could get me a link to an example or (even better) send me a link with an actual plan for this application. Ported speaker boxes usually follow some permutation of the Theil/Small equations. Generally you need to know three specifications about your woofer that have nothing in particular to do with it's size. Usually quoted with the drivers literature, Vas, Fs and Vb. These describe the free air resonance, box volume at resonance and other electromotive properties of the speaker. Porting formule are different from simpler closed box equations. The port itself is a Helmholtz radiator, and needs to be very carefully calculated and built, if it is to do anything at all. Generally, large speakers in small ported boxes have quite restricted bass ranges, usually far higher than the speaker can actually reach down to, trading away bass depth for volume at higher frequencies, raising the Q of the system. A good source for such plans would be places like radio shack, or online builder sites. These are becoming fewer these days, and even with Radio Shack, you will probably have to peruse the extended catalog to find a good simple guide. Well worth the time to find, though... If you are specifying a tuning at 33 Hz without supporting speaker Specs, you definitely need to get your hands on such a primer first. there are several box designer programs , some free, that you can find on the web. But without knowing what you are trading, and how it all works, and at a minimum the proper driver specs, you are whistling in the wind. Getting a large speaker to maintain a low Q in a Ported box tunable to 30 hz or so usually means something over four cubic feet in volume. (dependant on the specs). An average 8 inch driver tuned to 28 hz for example, has about a four inch deep by three inch round port enclosed in a 2.8 cubic foot volume enclosure ( a fair sized tower speaker)- again dependent on the specs, and the actual Q.

Kicker 12" L7 ported box?

I am planning to have a custom ported box built for my 2 12" kicker l7 this weekend. I saw this box on eBay let me know what you think.

I might have it built exactly like that one. The problem is it only has one chamber and one vent for both. Do you think this will be a good box? I want my l7 to be loud and boomy. The dimensions will fit perfectly inside my 01 accord trunk. I am open to any suggestions. Let me know what you think. Thanks in advance.

I don't see why they would sound bad in such a large enclosure. Kicker recommends many different enclosure options that you can put those subs into. The largest one is up to 3.25 cubic feet!!! And that is for 1 sub. I think that enclosure would probably be an ok one. I couldn't say for sure without checking it on some enclosure building software. From what i've seen from recommended enclosure sizes from kicker that is not too bad.

The only thing that I would say to look at is the port tuning frequency. If you are looking into more SPL and a boomy sound then that is kind of a low tuning frequency. Usually if you are looking for SPL you will have a higher tuning frequency. With a lower tuning frequency i would say that enclosure is built for more SQ then SPL. That is not to say that it wouldn't be loud though.

Putting two subs in a single chambered enclosure is pretty common for vented enclosures. It take up less space then an enclosure that has dividers in it. It also allows you to have a single port and not have 2 seperate ports. This will also help to save space. The sound will most likely not be effected much by having a single chamber. The downside is that if you ever blow a sub or if one of your subs is not performing well then you will risk damaging your other sub.

One suggestion I would give you is to make sure the vent has a big enough cross sectional area. If it is too small you will have port noise. From the picture it looked big enough to be ok. If you really wanted to make sure that the enclosure will look good then you can run it through a program like WinISD which let you see exactly how the subs would perform in an enclosure like that. Also, with an enclosure that big it is a good idea to use bracing to prevent flexing in the wood.
