Dithering: Illusion of More Colors

Adult websites contain full-color photographs with an almost infinite range of colors. These images show high resolution properties in computers with the latest graphic cards. But, the photographs displayed in 256 color computers can look quite unpleasant. In such cases, dithering technique is used to create an illusion of more colors.

Dithering is a process of blending pixels of two colors to create an illusion that a third color is present. A black and white bitmap image can be dithered to produce an illusion of the color gray. If the image allows a palette of more than two colors, then dithering can produce an illusion of multiple colors. Some adult website design firms combine black and white pixels in complicated patterns with the help of a graphics program like Adobe Photoshop to create illusion of gray color values.

The dithered technique was used in adult website designs when most users had low graphics card 256 color monitors. The screens supported only 256 colors and so the designers used dithered techniques to make sure that the photographs looked more appealing and vibrant.

Although dithering provided an illusion of colors, there are a number of color issues with it. Most adult designs have naturalistic images (human photographs). If dithering techniques are employed in such type of images, it tends to be more noticeable on low resolution devices. In simple terms, dithering reduces the overall sharpness of the human or natural images. One can easily notice a grainy pattern being developed in the image.

Nowadays, most web users have sophisticated graphic cards and display screens and because of truecolor display screens most designers opt for full-color JPEG graphics and GIF graphics. They expect that the images will be dithered in minute percentage in screens that are set to 256 colors. They employ browser safe colors with JPEG graphics. This ensures that only the images will get dithered in 256 color monitors, but the background and navigation buttons look the same.
