Car Stereo installation HELP?

I have a 66 mustang with no speakers or wiring. I put my deck under the dash, and it said to connect a wire to a constant voltage wire and a ignition controlled wire. fo the first i got the wire connected fine, the second i hooked up to my cigarrette lighter. is this ok?

one more thing, i used electrical tape only. do i need to use anything else or is my tape a good enough insulator. Thanks in advance!!!

Your cigarette lighter is likely to be a constant voltage source as well. If your deck's ignition wire is connected to constant voltage, it simply means that it won't turn on and off with the key. You'll have to switch it on and off manually. It's up to you whether this is a problem or not.

If your cigarette lighter is controlled by the key switch, then it will work fine for your deck's ignition source. I just don't think that's likely.

The easiest place to find an ignition controlled wire is probably at the back of the ignition switch itself.

Electrical tape is an acceptable insulator, if it's GOOD electrical tape. If it's the dollar-a-roll stuff, it will eventually turn brittle and fall off. It's worth paying for high quality tape. 3M's Super 33+ is professional-quality electrical tape.

Voltage Regulator in a car?

Car is a '74 dodge Dart 318. I unhooked the voltage regulator in my car (I'm not using any accessories, don't even have a stereo) and noticed an instant power increase. When i unhooked the regulator, the idle speed instantly rose about 200 rpm. Why is this? Do I need to have the voltage regulator hooked up if the only power I'm using is to run the engine and headlights (at night)?

your ignition and lighting are meant to run at a predetermined voltage... the voltage regulator will prevent premature wear of stock electronics.. plug that sucker back in immediately.
